About Hairline Lowering
Is the procedure painful?
On the contrary, it is routinely almost painless with the exception of a brief post-operative headache is some patients
How long does it last?
It is a permanent relocation of the one’s frontal hairline. In my experience it minimizes or eliminates future hair loss; there are a number of theories as to why.
How far can the hairline be lowered?
That depends on the “stiffness” of the advancing hair bearing scalp. The galea, a “Saran Wrap-like” layer under the scalp must be cut allowing the scalp to expand. The expansion of the scalp varies from patient to patient. On average ¾ to one inch can be routinely achieved.
Does the procedure leave a scar?
Yes, there is a scar in front of the forehead hairline and two parallel scars that connect the frontal incision to the back of the head. This creates a “tongue shaped” flap that can be advanced forward, reducing the forehead height. This is why surgical technique is critical. The flap must be advanced incrementally on the underlying bone in order to minimize any tension on the frontal hairline incision. In addition, the frontal hairline incision must be beveled such that hair follicles can grow through the scar to camouflage it. 99% of scars are barely visible or invisible. Some are pigmented and medical tattoo effectively camouflages these off colored pigmented scars
Can it be done to look natural?
The technique of following the undulations of the natural hairline as well as beveling the incision to enable hair follicles to grow through the incision make it look natural enough for most patients to comment on how good the scar looks
Is there an ideal age to get the procedure?
No, I have done teenagers and seventy-year-olds.
How long can recovery take?
3-4 days out of work, bruising and swelling are only minor to moderate issues and sutures are removed two weeks post operatively.
